Art and Cake was founded by Kristine Schomaker in 2016. Schomaker, who earned her MA in Studio Art/Art History from California State University Northridge, wanted to use her art history background to draw attention to voices that aren't normally amplified in the art world.
Since 2016, Art and Cake has become an integral voice in the Los Angeles art community by promoting artists and spaces previously overlooked by mainstream media. In 2024, Schomaker’s nonprofit January Arts—founded in 2018—took Art and Cake under its wing as publisher.
