Celebrating Art and Cake

Art and Cake was founded by Kristine Schomaker in 2016. Schomaker, who earned her MA in Studio Art/Art History from California State University Northridge, wanted to use her art history background to draw attention to voices that aren't normally amplified in the art world.

Since 2016, Art and Cake has become an integral voice in the Los Angeles art community by promoting artists and spaces previously overlooked by mainstream media. In 2024, January Arts, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2018, took Art and Cake under its wing as publisher. In 2026, January Arts rebranded as Art and Cake, reflecting the organization's singular focus on independent arts journalism and the Los Angeles art community.

"What I always appreciate about Art & Cake is how there's a real intentionality about highlighting artists outside the blue chip bandwagon mode, and to spread some love around within the real life art community in LA—and the same goes for its aspiring art writers. But at the same time, there's always room for bigger names at Art and Cake — both artists and writers — to also come and contribute ideas to that same conversation that maybe don't fit neatly into our other, fewer, and more editorially rigid and/or commercially-driven publications.
