Hammer Museum Announces Curators for Made in L.A. 2018

The Hammer Museum has announced the curators for the 2018 iteration of Made in L.A. Hammer senior curator Anne Ellegood and independent LA-based curator Erin Christovale will join forces to serve at the curatorial helm for the fourth in this continuing series of exhibitions.

Made in L.A. focuses on emerging and under-recognized artists who are creating work in the greater Los Angeles area. The biennial exhibition introduces new installations, sculptures, paintings, films, videos, and live performances which are specifically commissioned for the exhibition. The goal is to create an inclusive, encompassing picture of the current LA-based art trends and practices. Made in L.A. had an exciting beginning in 2012, with subsequent exhibitions in 2014 and 2016.

The upcoming exhibition will be on view from June through September 2018. The complete list of participating artists will be announced early in 2018.

According to Hammer Director Ann Philbin, Ellegood and Christovale are “both fierce champions for artists, and we are excited to see the fresh perspectives and discoveries these two will bring forward.”

Ellegood is the Senior Curator at the Hammer Museum, organizing exhibitions and building the museum’s collection, as well as overseeing the Hammer Projects series and the Public Engagement program. She’s worked at the museum since 2009. Prior to her tenure at the Hammer, she served as Curator of Contemporary Art at the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C. and as Associate Curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art. Recent local exhibitions include a Hammer Project solo show with Kevin Beasley, and a solo show with John Outterbridge presented at Art + Practice in Leimert Park (2016). Ellegood also curated the 2014 exhibition Take It or Leave It: Institution, Image, Ideology with Johanna Burton, as well as the museum’s current Jimmie Durham retrospective. This is not Ellegood’s first curation of Made in L.A.: she organized the initial 2012 exhibition along with a team of co-curators.

Christovale is the curator of Black Radical Imagination with Amir George, described as a traveling short-film screening program which “focuses on the aesthetics of Afrofuturism.” The program includes new media, video art, and experimental narrative production. It has screened both nationally and internationally at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, PS1, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, and the Museo Taller Jose Clemente Orozco in Guadalajara, Mexico. Previously, she served as curator at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. Recent exhibitions include a/wake in the water: Meditations on Disaster at the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts in 2014, Memoirs of A Watermelon Woman (2016) and A Subtle Likeness (2016) at the ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives, and S/Election: Democracy, Citizenship, Freedom at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery.

In conjunction with Made in L.A. 2018, there will be a presentation of The Mohn Awards, funded through Los Angeles philanthropists and art collectors Jarl and Pamela Mohn. These awards encompass the Mohn Award, the Career Achievement Award, and the Public Recognition Award, the latter of which will be determined through a public vote.
